Topical Hair Growth Formulations
- Minoxidil 5%: Minoxidil is a vasodilator that promotes blood circulation to the hair follicles. It extends the anagen, or growth phase of the hair cycle, resulting in thicker and denser hair. Minoxidil may also stimulate dormant hair follicles to enter the growth phase.
- Tretinoin: Tretinoin, a derivative of vitamin A, enhances the absorption and effectiveness of other ingredients in the formulation. It works by promoting cell turnover and removing dead skin cells, unclogging hair follicles, and allowing for healthier hair growth. Tretinoin can also improve the penetration of minoxidil into the scalp.
- Fluocinolone: Fluocinolone is a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces inflammation and irritation on the scalp, which can contribute to hair loss. Finasteride
Finasteride is an oral medication commonly used to treat male pattern baldness, which is characterized by hair loss in men. It belongs to the class of drugs known as 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors.
Finasteride inhibits 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone to DHT. DHT shrinks hair follicles and may cause hair loss in people with male pattern baldness.
By lowering DHT levels in the scalp, finasteride helps to reverse the miniaturization process of hair follicles, allowing them to regain their normal size. This can lead to increased hair thickness and regrowth.
